Gordon Ashworth Bowling Club NewsHere we are again, with news of what has taken place during the month of August. First of all we held a mixed doubles competition on the 9th, this was won by Louise and Adam Smith. Next, on the 13th, we had an away day at the George Hotel, Compstall. 34 people attended the lunch and 28 took part in the competition. Joint winners of this event were Roy Hopkins and Nancy Hadfield. Our Round Robin competition was held on 25th and the winner was Andrew Muir, in his first year at the club - well done. Lastly on the 30th, the Aspin Shield competition took place and was won by Scott Smith, the runner up being Roy Hopkins. Members commented that it was the best final in a long time. To all of the organisers of these events; the card markers, sheet markers, and finally, to all who took part whether as a participant or observer, our thanks for your support. Jock Egginton |
A Short HistoryThe club was founded in 1930. The bowling green was laid on a corner of Norbury playing field and officially opened on Saturday, 23rd May 1931.  A second-hand pavilion was purchased from the Cheadle Heath Lacrosse Club for the sum of £23.00. An electrical supply was not laid on until 1935. An additional pavilion was built in 1937, at a cost of £130. The new pavilion was joined to the old pavilion by cutting the original small pavilion down the centre, and each half was then joined to the new pavilion. During the war years no further activity took place. Further additions were made to the pavilion in the winter of 1959-60 when work on a veranda was started. The improved pavilion was opened in April 1960. The 1980 Chairman, Mr. George Irving with other members, designed and engineered the construction of this veranda. When the Bowling Green was first opened no water was laid on. A ‘dandy' was used to convey water from the old vicarage for drinking purposes until a pipe was laid in 1940. Water for making tea and washing up was boiled on a Primus stove until the electricity was laid on in 1935. The original membership of the club is recorded to have been 40 members. At the 1980 centenary celebrations there were 58 full members and 4 life members. The original wooden pavilion burned down in 1991, and the present one built with all amenities. Now, its 70-plus members range from juniors, aged 10 to 18, to elderly people, some disabled. The club's playing season commences in April and finishes in September. In both summer and winter there are other social activities such as outings, meals and whist drives. The club members play in many local league games, and expert instruction by qualified people is available for juniors and adults. The voluntary efforts of the members have, over the years, turned an open field given to the parishioners in 1922, into a well established landscape feature with very attractive gardens and a well laid out flagged patio. The club is affiliated to the British Crown Green Bowling Association, the Stockport Sports Council, and also to the Cheshire County Bowling Association. It also has a team in the Alderley Edge League, Division Two.  Peter Kress |
