First Aid Boxes

These are located in the church kitchen and the clergy vestry.

Their contents are checked and kept stocked and up to date by the verger.

Medicines and tablets must not be kept in the First Aid Box.

Items should not be administered without the consent of the participant or the parent if the participant is a child.

First Aiders

An up to date list of trained/ qualified First Aiders is kept in the First Aid boxes, in the clergy vestry and on the First Aid poster display.

First Aiders should inform the Property Manager or Vicar about six months before their certificate of competence is due to expire so that arrangements can be made to renew it by attending a relevant First Aid course.

Availability of First Aiders

It is desirable to have at least one First Aid trained person in the church building whenever it is in use for services and large meetings or where it is considered by the organizer or co-ordinator that the risk of an accident or illness occurring is high. This should be somebody with a suitable First Aid qualification (either having attended a First Aid at Work course or an accredited appointed person course)

Where First Aiders are not available, a person should be nominated by the organisation or group using the building to take charge of the co-ordination of activities in the event of an emergency occurring. They will be responsible for summoning trained personnel and professional assistance and should not administer First Aid treatment other than emergency treatment and then only when specifically trained.

Telephones for Summoning Emergency Services

If a mobile phone is available this is considered the best way to summon emergency services in the event of an accident or emergency. There are also telephones in the Church Office and the kitchen.

The Accident Book

This is kept in the kitchen (to the left of the serving hatch into the Legh Room). Accidents and incidents resulting in an injury must be entered in the accident book and the lower portion of the entry should then be passed on to the Property Manager who will keep it in a secure file in the Church Office.

The church insurers will be advised, as necessary, of any accidents.

Accident books and accident records are regularly reviewed.

Fatal accidents, major injuries and dangerous occurrences will be reported immediately by the Property Manager or in her absence by another member of staff by the quickest practicable means to the relevant enforcing authority under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.

It is a condition of the Church Hire Agreement that hirers using the church or narthex rooms must enter details of accidents or incidents in the accident book.

Sole Workers

There are times when people are on their own in church, for example staff, those opening up and locking building for organisations.

Foreseeable dangerous situations and working practices should be considered and risks avoided. Also the fitness and medical history of the person involved should be considered. If it is possible that they may fall ill and cannot summon aid they should avoid being alone in the church building and churchyard.

This summary should be read in conjunction with the Church Health and Safety Policy Booklet which is kept in the church office.
