Sunday Lunches
The Sunday Lunch Project has now been running for some 35 years and, believe it or not, some of the original team members are still there. As you can imagine, they are not as young as they used to be, but they are still young at heart and enjoy providing this important service for those who would otherwise eat their Sunday lunch alone.
We would like to introduce some new volunteers to the teams, so if you would be prepared to join us, or if you know someone who is keen to do some voluntary work, please contact either Liz Turner 0161 483 5206 or Doreen Sykes 0161 483 2857.
The commitment involves seven ecumenical teams providing two Sunday lunches per year - usually one in the Spring/Summer and one in Autumn/Winter. The lunches are all prepared and served at Wesley Street and each team has around eight or ten members - each with their own skills whether it’s setting tables, cooking, preparing sweets, driving or welcoming the guests - they are all part of a whole - and we’d love you to join one of the groups.
We have a register of guests from which to choose, and if you know anyone who would benefit from sharing a Sunday Lunch amongst friends, please let us know.
We also have a party each year at St Peter’s Social Club to which we invite everyone on our guest register. This is an extra commitment but a very enjoyable one.
If you feel you cannot commit to joining a Sunday Lunch Team, then perhaps you could volunteer to help with transport. The pressure occurs when we are getting our guests to Wesley Street whilst the cooking and preparation is going on - there are not always enough drivers available. Transporting home afterwards is not usually a problem.
The originals amongst us all started when we had youngsters at home, and because of the age range - small children through to elderly guests - there was a real family feel about the meals. So please, young parents and their children, do volunteer, we promise not to make you stay for 30+ years.
