Welcomers/Stewards Meeting
A reminder that there will be a meeting for all Stewards, Welcomers and Wardens at Norbury on Wednesday 1st February, at 7.45pm. This will be a rare chance to get together and discuss all aspects of the welcome we hope to offer to all those who attend and visit church. There will be training and ideas offered and shared, and the chance to feed back on our different experiences in this area. The intention is to make our church even more friendly and inclusive. We hope it will be a helpful and enjoyable evening, and that all involved will be able to join us.
Sermon Series - "One in Spirit and Purpose"
We are running a sermon series in the morning services in February. We’ll be looking at the second chapter from St Paul’s wonderful letter to the Philippians and the overall title of the series will be One in Spirit and Purpose, a phrase from verse 2 of that section. It’s a four part series beginning on 5th February and continuing weekly with the exception of 12th February (All-Age Sunday). So the scheme looks like this:
- 5th February - ch.2 v.1-4 - “The same love”
- 19th - ch.2 v.5-11 - “The same humility”
- 26th - ch.2 v.12-18 - “The same purpose”
- 4th March - ch.2 v.19-30 - “The same work”
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday – the first day of Lent – falls on 22nd February and, as usual, we shall mark this important day in the church calendar with a service in church at 7.30pm.
This will be a Communion service including, for those who wish, the “imposition of ashes” (receiving the sign of the cross on the forehead in ash) accompanied by prayer. We shall reflect on our mortality and our human sinfulness, and on the extraordinary grace and love of God in the forgiveness and new life he offers us.
We hope you’ll find the service meaningful and helpful as we start the journey towards the cross and on to Easter.
Lent Groups in Olympic Year!
As a joint venture with the other churches in Hazel Grove, we shall be holding a series of sessions of reflection, prayer and discussion on Wednesday evenings during Lent. In this Olympic year, the title of the course is Handing on the Torch – Sacred Words for a Secular World.
Lent is a season of preparation for Holy Week and Easter. It’s good to set aside a little time in our busy lives for reflection and study, to consider how we can apply our faith in our lives and to meet with friends from other churches. As usual, we’ll be meeting in the various churches week by week.
The sessions will start at 7.30pm as follows:
- 29th February - United Reformed Church
- 7th March - Hazel Grove Baptist
- 14th March - Norbury
- 21st March - St Peter’s RC
- 28th March - Methodist
Do join us for what we hope will be another stimulating series of meetings. Everyone is most welcome whether or not they belong to a church already. And don’t worry if you can’t make all the sessions – it’s fine to dip in to whichever ones you can manage.
Treasurer And Churchwarden
As previously outlined, Trevor Tinson officially took over from David Scott as Norbury Treasurer from 1st January 2012, alongside Liz Snape (Book-keeper) and the rest of the treasury team – Richard Crocker (wages), Peter Broadbent (Gift Aid and Parish Giving Officer) and Jimmy Downs (Verger’s Account).
At the same time, Lawrence Dark took over as acting churchwarden. Trevor is still officially in post as warden until the Annual Meeting in April but with Lawrence taking on most of his churchwarden’s duties in this interim period.
We are very grateful indeed to all those mentioned for the important work they have been, and will be, doing.
