PCC Jottings - January 2008 |

The PCC met on a very wet and dark Monday evening. Your scribe had decided to reduce his carbon footprint and therefore had walked to the event. Bad mistake, as it took most of the meeting to dry out, and have you ever tried to write on wet paper? So this is my excuse for this report being somewhat shorter than normal. Despite the foul weather it was a good turnout of members. It was noted that Richard Crocker is doing his Reader placement at High Lane, and our best wishes go out to him. The meeting started with the incumbent informing us that the video/DVD player had been stolen that very evening. Very inconvenient as your scribe’s wife was just about to use it for showing the baptism video (not to the PCC but to prospective users of our baptism service). Since the video/DVD player had not recorded who took it, it has now been replaced with a new one from Asda. The Treasurer reported the preliminary financial result as a deficit of around £18,000 for 2007. Although some costs were specific to the year, such as the securing of memorials in the churchyard, 2008 will most likely see an even bigger loss. We are fortunate that at present the deficit can for be sustained from our funds, but in the longer run this situation is untenable. This is something that everyone at Norbury needs to pray about. Under the heading “developing personal spirituality” we learned that this topic would be the focus for evening services after Easter. |
To assist prospective speakers, of which around 15 had been identified, Rob will run training sessions on 8th and 15th April on presentation and preaching. The list of prospective speakers was not revealed, but no one will be press ganged into speaking. No doubt, this cohort of prospective speakers will stand Norbury in good stead during the vacancy. We learnt that Norbury not only produced worship but paper to go along with it too. Or to be exact, 750,000 copies over 15 years! As a result the office printer and photocopier have had to be replaced, but future print costs should be somewhat lower, and we can now print double-sided copies, which could save a few trees. At this point Craig Harper declared that someone had moved his cheese. Needless to say this caused some confusion, but things became clearer, once Craig gave us all a book on managing change named “Who moved my cheese”. This was certainly a change from normal proceedings, as your scribe has not been given items at PCC meetings before. The book turned out to be a good read, and should prove useful during the coming year, so many thanks Craig! Finally, we were told that the Bishop of Chester and Mayor of Stockport were to attend the afternoon session of “Back to the 80s” musical. Your scribe and wife attended the evening performance, and it was a most enjoyable event. Many thanks to Catie-Anne and her team! Per Olsson |
