The Christingle Service

Christingle was established by the Moravian Church in 1747 as a symbol of Christ’s light and love. The Children’s Society introduced it to the Church of England in 1968 and in recent years it has become part of the Christmas tradition here at Norbury.

Many people ask what the Christingle represents. The lighted candle symbolises Christ, the Light of the World. The candle is placed in an orange which represents the world surrounded by the red ribbon which is the blood of Christ.

The 4 sticks are placed in the orange to represent the 4 seasons and the sweets stuck on to the sticks represent the fruits of the earth.

Come and join us at the Christingle service this year and support this worthwhile work.

‘Giving Children Back Their Childhood’ - The Current Campaign

The Children’s Society was started by Edward Rudolf who was a Sunday School teacher in the 1880’s. He wanted to make a difference to the lives of the many destitute and poor children he saw. So he created Cottage Homes as an alternative to the large institutionalised Victorian children’s homes and workhouses. He wanted children who had no family to be brought up in an environment that provided love and stability which every child needs to thrive. He did not want them hidden from view and forgotten about but he wanted them to be free to enjoy their childhood, to attend local schools and churches and be part of the community.

Today the Children’s Society has the same aims, supporting children who face discrimination or disadvantage in their daily lives, children who sleep rough, children fleeing conflict in the home and in war zones, children who are isolated by disability.

The Children’s Society is campaigning on various issues to give children back their childhood. They do this through a variety of projects including the Disability Advocacy Project in London which helps severely disabled children to have a voice, and Safe Care in the City in Manchester which works with children who are at risk and are living on the streets.
