2 Samuel 15:1-12. Absalom conspires against his father, David
- Absalom had a habit of getting his own way, by fair means or foul. He
had planned revenge on the man who had raped his sister and he eventually
murdered him, even though that was clearly forbidden in Old Testament law.
David had cut off contact with Absalom because of that, but he kept hoping
that Absalom would change. Absalom did not.
- Now Absalom schemed to oust his father from the throne and become king.
For four years he got enough people to support him, by flattery or threats.
He was attractive and had winning ways (14:25). Now he was ready to march
on Jerusalem and overthrow his father. He gave the impression that he was
deeply concerned about justice (15:2-4), but he himself was an unpunished
murderer.
- Absalom was not interested in seeing God’s justice done; he had
taken the law into his own hands and committed murder. He was also not
interested in what God’s will might be; he was determined to seize
the throne by force rather than wait until he might be duly anointed
king.
- Meanwhile David was losing his grip and becoming too indulgent with his
son, who cared only for himself.
- To consider
-
- How can Scripture help us to know what God’s will is?
- How can we learn to act in God’s way and in his time, rather than
trying to do things our way?
- Prayer
- Father God, your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path;
help me to come to know the Bible better, and through it find your will,
and take joy in living my life according to it; in Jesus’ name.
Amen
