2 Samuel 2:1-11. David becomes king over Judah
- In this reading we begin the account of David’s life and reign as
king over Judah and then later over all of Israel.
- Success
- At this point in his life David is at the threshold of greatness with
his power and success there for all to see. What type of king and leader
would he go on to be? Would people continue to follow him? Where would he
take them? Has success come easily to him?
- Direction
- David is shown to be a man who had great devotion to God –
emphasised at the beginning of the passage where he is seeking to find out
from God what next steps and direction his life must take. What is the
nature of David’s relationship with God at this point in his
life?
- Hope
- We know from reading much more about David that he is far from perfect.
He has often got things wrong in the past and will continue to do
so—just like we all do. Yet despite all of this, God is there with
him, working with him, encouraging him, directing and supporting him
throughout his life.
- To consider
-
- When we pray and talk with God in the quiet moments of our hectic
lives, how open are we to listening and knowing what he wants us to
do?
- How important is it to have leaders in our world and in other aspects
of our lives who are committed Christians? What help, support and
encouragement can we offer these people?
- Prayer
- Lord Jesus open our minds and hearts to listen to what and where you
want us to be. Guide us at all times in our lives - both good and bad - to
come closer to you.
- (Listen to and perhaps sing out the words of that great traditional
hymn, Guide me, O thou Great Redeemer).
