2 Samuel 1:17–27: David laments the deaths of Saul and
Jonathan
- In this reading Saul and Jonathan have died in battle. David has
composed a song to remember them by.
- Among David's many skills, he was a composer and poet. He knew that
song was a powerful way to motivate people by remembering. By recalling
Israel's lost heroes and defeat they would be inspired to prepare
conscientiously for the next battle. He ordered that the men be taught this
lament, or song, to motivate them when practising with Israel's
principal weapon, the bow. He wanted them to be the best that they could be
and use the bow to maximum effect, not for their own benefit, but for the
greater good of their nation. This model also works for us. What special
qualities or skills has God given us?
- David has good reason to hate Saul but chooses to look at his good
qualities and does not speak about the bad. There is no hint of bitterness.
Jonathan should, by birthright have succeeded his father as king and leader
of Israel, but early on he recognised David as the Lord's choice to
take his place. In spite of this he loved David wonderfully. Here God shows
us two different types of love; the respect and dutiful love we show to
those who do us wrong, and the emotional love of feelings towards someone
we are attracted to.
- David, as king, commanded that the honour, strength, bravery and
popularity of Saul and Jonathan should be proclaimed throughout the whole
of the enemy territory. We are also commanded, by our King, to proclaim His
qualities and deeds throughout the enemy territory in which we live.
- To consider
-
- How do we react to people we find difficult?
- How would you like to be remembered?
- Prayer
- Lord, you are my King. Help me to see other people as you see them and
to know how to use the skills and qualities you have given me to your best
advantage. Amen.
