- Read Daniel 9:4-6, 17-19
- Many of us find ourselves in a position where our faith is
attacked. The story of Daniel in the Lion's den can be a great
source of strength to us then.
- When this incident took place, Daniel was on old man in the land of
Babylon. He had served in a position of great trust and authority under
three kings. He was not only counted as trustworthy by all the kings,
he was also seen as wise and full of insight.
- The third king, Darius, was tricked by jealous people into signing
an edict that only he was to be worshipped. When Daniel continued
openly to worship God, he knew he was taking a risk. Even the king
could not disobey the law, even though he did not want Daniel to die.
Daniel's deliverance from the dangerous lions was proof of
God's protection.
- When it comes to putting God first in our lives, we have to trust
that that in itself is worth more than anything else in the world. Many
people - including most of Jesus' first followers - have died for
their faith rather than betray that trust.
- Daniel was courageous in a way that is often not valued by society.
Our society often values physical courage. Daniel shows us an example
of moral courage and spiritual courage.
- There are people who will be impressed by our moral and spiritual
courage. They might even want to know more about what we believe, and
become Christians.
- To think about
- 1. If I was ordered to abandon aspects of my faith, what is there
that I would refuse to give up?
- 2. Today's reading ends with a prayer that Jerusalem may be
blessed. What would we most like to see God doing in our country?
- Prayer
- Father, we thank you for Daniel's courage and example. We pray
that you will help us to keep true to what in our heart of hearts we
know to be right. Help us to value our relationship with you and other
people above all material things.
