- Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-13
- Abraham Lincoln once famously said that you can please some of the
people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you
can't please all of the people all of the time. Those in the public
eye in Britain surely understand the truth in these words.
- As a nation we love to criticise. However, we did do a good job of
celebrating our rugby team winning the World Cup last year. It is
perhaps more a case of 'you can't please many of the people
much of the time!'
- Today's passage relates to an important occasion. David and his
fellow Israelite leaders have come together to plan the building of the
Temple, which will actually become a reality when Solomon is King.
David makes it an occasion of national celebration. As all those
assembled look on, David pours out his heart in praise to God who has
given them their land and led them through many trials and tribulations
(v.10-13).
- Praise was a natural thing for David to do. In spite of the fact
that David had got it very wrong on a number of occasions, God had
never let him down. Here he holds nothing back as he praises the
majesty, splendour, strength and power of God.
- As we lift our heads in praise and behold the glory of our God we
understand that the things that trouble us, get us down, create
anxiety, cause conflict and sometimes make us despair are not
invincible. In our passage David says to God, In your hands are
strength and power to exalt and give strength to all (v.12). Our God is
not impotent or indifferent. We are in his hands and he will never let
us go. Reflecting on that alone may release us in praise. That praise
enriches our lives.
- To think about
- In each prayer time, can you find something to thank God for and to
praise him?
- Prayer
- Father, we thank you for the things we might take for granted - for
family and friends. We thank you for the wonderful fellowship of
Norbury Church, for all the good that has happened to us recently, and
for the special way you show your love. Most of all we thank you that
you are a great and glorious God.
