Bible Study - Acts 8: 1-25

Read Acts chapter 8 verses 1-25
The spectacular success of the Gospel in Jerusalem led, inevitably, to intense persecution of the believers, who left the capital in haste and scattered to the four winds. Circumstances might have dictated leaving their most precious material possessions behind but, in their flight, these refugees became, overnight, "apostles" ('those sent'), bearing the Gospel into regions "unvisited and unblest". Through them, many new churches sprang up in the provinces and the number of believers grew apace.
One apostle, Philip. heading hotfoot for the capital of Samaria, brought "great joy in that city". The crowds that gathered wherever he went "paid close attention to what he said". There was more than oratory in his message, and more than human power in his deeds.
The story of Simon the Sorcerer brings into focus a personal encounter, as distinct from a crowd scene. Religion, and Christianity is no exception, has often attracted individuals of dubious integrity who have manipulated both the message and those attracted to it, for personal aggrandisement. (See, for example, the 1960 Oscar winning film, "Elmer Gantry" starring Burt Lancaster). The sin of "simony" so prevalent in the Middle Ages, whereby religious pardons and privileges were bought and sold, derives its name from this first century fraudster. Such was the legacy of the man whom Acts records as one who "claimed that he was someone great".
For thought
Refugees became Apostles. Can you think of any adverse circumstance in your personal life which had a positive outcome?
Many things are said in commentaries about Simon's subsequent career but nothing can be satisfactorily authenticated. As we leave him, quite literally, 'in limbo', where would you imagine his steps took him in the days that followed his encounter with Peter and John?
Prayer
O God, forgive me when I become too proud of myself and my achievements; and if, in my weakness, I fall, give me courage to begin again.
