Read Acts chapter 6 verses 1-7
The Christian Church continued the Jewish tradition of the daily distribution of food to those in need. (All Christians at this time were of Jewish origin - there were as yet no Gentiles in the Church.) Unfortunately, a clear division was beginning to emerge. Those who came from outside Palestine felt they were being discriminated against in the distribution of food.
In other words, some members of the Christian Church had already started to become snobbish!
It is interesting to note how the apostles coped with this situation. They could easily have tried to use their authority to demand that all received equal treatment. But this would have taken them away from their main task of preaching, teaching and leading worship. Instead, they let seven men be chosen, who came from outside Palestine, to ensure that the food was distributed fairly. The apostles regarded this work as so important that they prayed over them and laid hands on them (verse 6).
Their solution was effective. In verse 7 we are told that the Church grew rapidly, and that a large number of Jewish priests joined it.
This method of dealing with practical matters in the church has important implications for us. Administrators have as vital a role in the church as preachers, worship leaders and pastors. It is important that each person has his or her task valued by the church.
Questions
How aware am I of all the people who carry out tasks to enable Norbury?
How might I pray for all these people in a more informed way?
Prayer
Father, God, we pray that people may be found to do all the tasks that are needed in the church. We remember how important it is that each of these tasks is done well, for our mutual support, and for our witness to people around us. Help us to know what part you want each one of us to play in all this; in Jesus' name. Amen.
