Buried Treasure? |

Unearth God's Riches this Bible SundayYou know what it’s like to find a £10 note in your wallet that you’d forgotten was there, or to rediscover an old card from a loved one that makes you smile. You know what it’s like to find treasure. In our church, we’ll soon be celebrating a different kind of treasure – God’s Word. On Bible Sunday, on 23rd November at 10.15am, we’ll be unearthing the riches of the Bible once more, in order to know God better and live his way. So get ready for an exciting and creative event, thanks to the treasure trove of brilliant resources provided by the Bible Society. At the heart of it all is Psalm 119, the longest Psalm in the Bible and a celebration of God’s words and Scriptures. In it we’ll read about the Psalmist’s excitement about God’s law. It’s as if he’s discovered treasure! So on Bible Sunday we’ll be invited to unearth this treasure for ourselves, bury it in our hearts, and share it with others. There are two ways to share the treasure this year. One is to take part in Bible Monday, the Bible Society’s Take Your Bible to Work Day, the day after Bible Sunday. Get God on your iPod and listen to an audio Bible on the bus, read Matthew instead of The Metro, or stick a post-it verse on your computer. To access the Bible by audio, visit the Bible Society’s website on www.faithcomesbyhearing.com and follow the instructions, select the version of your choice, and download it to your computer, and load it to your iPod or MP3 player. This service is absolutely free! However you do it, take your Bible with you! |
The other way we can share God’s riches is to use our gifts to help children and young people all over the world to unlock the Bible’s treasure for themselves. This year, our gifts will provide Bibles for children, like those in Jamaica’s Sidewalk Sunday Schools. By bringing the hope of Scripture to young people affected by drugs, gangs and violent crime, we can play a part in the Bible Society’s mission to see lives and communities transformed by the Bible’s inspiration, revelation and wisdom. What’s important is that the children realise they have worth and value, said Courtney Stewart, General Secretary of the Bible Society of the West Indies. The drugs and violence, the criminal behaviour, is not the only option. There’s another way, a way of hope. It’s by engaging with the Scriptures that the scales will fall from their eyes. Their way leads to death. The Word of God speaks of hope. So don’t miss this year’s Bible Sunday. Don’t pass up the chance to unearth the Bible’s riches for yourself, and don’t miss the opportunity to help young people around the world discover the Bible’s life changing message. Sylvia Scott |
